Is being Selfish Good?

To protect one's interests is primary and natural in all human beings. Is being selfish the only way? or being selfless is wiser? Who is more evolved a selfish or selfless being?

My family, my career, my garden and my dog ....my my my and me me me me...

When you meet some people, haven't you observed they cant stop talking about themselves. It can get very irritating and also one cannot connect with someone who is not interested in the other human...

According to me the weak and the fearful are selfish. They are the people one needs to feel sympathy for rather than get angry with.

The brave and the fearless are selfless. They can take risks and pains to help another. They can think beyond themselves, and leave behind the me & myself saga :)

I see selfishness as a virtue .. we do everything that gives us happiness ... so if we go and help some one, it is becos we derive satisfaction.. that some one getting benefited is just a side effect

yes but with that intent may not be fulfilling..its limiting.
I think we derive the happiness and satisfaction as a side effect...cannot b d driving factor to help someone "Let me make myself happy by helping this person?" :D

And yes selfishness as a virtue has another word for it - I guess :)

@Sid And I have read it as Ayn Rand's philosophy as Selfishness as a virtue..I love here writing but she can get extreme too in her thinking. Tho thats what I liked about her.

I think we should meet and discuss more about this :P

It's probably how comfortable you are with yourself. But each one his own. It's also probably a long journey, reaching that state where one can be selfless.

There is a lot of difference between being selfish and self-centered. So I guess what you said about people talking about themselves is pure self-obsession. I, however, cannot deny the fact that selfishness is a negative feeling which one day has to get off your back. :)
