The Spiritual Seeker

Jiddu Krishnamurti (various writings)

Most people are unhappy; and they are unhappy because there is no love in their hearts.

Freedom lies outside the pattern of society; but to be free of that pattern you have to understand the whole content of it, which is to understand your own mind.

You can be creative only when there is abandonment--which means, really, there is no sense of compulsion, no fear of not being, of not gaining, of not arriving. Then there is great austerity, simplicity, and with it there is love.

It is necessary for all of us to awaken in ourselves this spirit of cooperation, for then it will not be a mere plan or agreement which causes us to work together, but an extraordinary feeling of togetherness, the sense of joy in being and doing together without any thought of reward or punishment.

Through self-knowledge you begin to find out what is God, what is truth, what is that state which is timeless. In self-knowledge is the whole universe; it embraces all the struggles of humanity.

To understand what is right meditation there must be an awareness of the operation of one's own consciousness, and then there is complete attention.

As long as you ask questions you are breaking through, but the moment you begin to accept, you are psychologically dead. So right through life don't accept a thing, but inquire, investigate. Then you will find that your mind is something really extraordinary, it has no end, and to such a mind there is no death.

It is only in a very quiet mind that great things are born; and a quiet mind does not come about through effort, through control, through discipline.

A mind that practices love cannot love.

Do not pursue what should be, but understand what is.

Love is the most practical thing in the world. To love, to be kind, not to be greedy, not to be ambitious, not to be influenced by people but to think for yourself--these are all very practical things, and they will bring about a practical, happy society.

In the search for reality, energy creates its own discipline. But mere discipline, without full comprehension of all this, has no meaning, it is a most destructive thing.

The man who is seeking truth is free of all societies and cultures.

Meditation is the process of understanding your own mind.

Are you aware of the significance of every thought, of every reaction that you happen to have?

When the mind sees itself in the mirror of relationship, from that perception there is self-knowledge.

Goodness, generosity, or love does not come into being save through the search for reality.

Mere isolation in an enclosing idea is not a release from conflict.

To know oneself is to study oneself in action, which is relationship.

We have so committed ourselves in different ways that we have hardly any time for self-reflection, to observe, to study.

The more you know yourself, the more clarity there is.

Only when the mind is tranquil--through self-knowledge and not through imposed self-discipline--only then, in that tranquillity, in that silence, can reality come into being. It is only then that there can be bliss, that there can be creative action.

Being discontented, we either seek a different job or merely succumb to environment…instead of causing us to question life, the whole process of existence.

We are empty shells if we do not possess, if we do not fill our life with furniture, with music, with knowledge, with this or that. And that shell makes a lot of noise, and that noise we call living; and with that we are satisfied. When there is a disruption, a breaking away of that, then there is sorrow, because you suddenly discover yourself as you are--an empty shell, without much meaning.

The very attention given to finding out if the mind can be completely quiet is quietness.

Most people like to live in illusions.

Our conflict is in relationship, at all levels of our existence; and the understanding of this relationship, completely and extensively, is the only real problem that each one has.

Achieve order within yourself…an inward tranquility which knows no disturbance at any moment…in the daily life of the home and the office.

Free yourself from the psychological structure of society, which is to free yourself from the essence of conflict.

Freedom lies beyond the field of consciousness.

Attachment

I remember a spiritual guru saying that the biggest problem he faces is with women, they get attached and emotional with the Guru itself. Teaching detachment to them is even more difficult, being a woman I am getting aware to that :)

While I was talking to my friend and spiritual guru, I asked this question today...

Me : How can we be detached as you said? How can one walk away with no strings attached?
Him:  By simple accepting things without any modifications (according to our fantasies). Without any expectations. Accept the unaltered truth and you will be detached.

Me: No masala? :)
Him: Masala is Maya and Maya is dangerous. Keeps one in illusion and being in an illusion means drifting away from the truth.

Happiness

Today someone asked me on chat "What should I do to be happy?"

I pondered:
Why should someone want to be happy, why is each human seeking happiness? :)

We humans want to take lot of actions to be happy...why can we just BE

There is a difference between DOING and BEING

Lets just BE happy, we dont have to DO a whole lot of things trying to achieve happiness, wont lead us anywhere....JUST BE!! :)

Channelize your sexual energies

The desire for sexual expression is by far the strongest and most impelling of all the human emotions, and for this very reason this desire, when harnessed and transmuted into action, other than that of physical expression, may raise one to the status of a genius.

-Napoleon Hill (from his book "Think and Grow Rich")

I read this at a very early age and would want all the youngsters to understand this as early in their lives.

Me, God, World, Mind and the Soul

‎"Just as the mind is real, reality is in some respects like a mind. But when we attempt to answer the obvious question "whose mind?", the answer turns out to be a mathematical and scientific definition of God.

This implies that we all exist in what can be called "the Mind of God", and that our individual minds are parts of God's Mind. ...

This connection of our minds to the Mind of God, which is like the connection of parts to a whole, is what we sometimes call the soul or spirit, and it is the most crucial and essential part of being human." Christopher Langan

Solution to the Problem

What really stresses us most is not able to hit on a solution to our problems... and we so much love them that's why I call them "our" problems. The affinity is so high that we revel in the problem, looking for a solution and not finding any....

An increasing resistance to whats happening to us and the constant question: "why would things go another way and not my way", hence we are not able to comprehend the problem but yet seek a way out.

As I always say: the key is awareness. Understand the problem and there is a magical sequence of events leading to the solution. The solution is not a big deal, an awareness to the issue, gives an opening.

Our non-acceptance of the problem followed by fearing to understand it is the main obstacle to the solution.

Mother Teresa: "Do It Anyway"

The version found written on the wall in Mother Teresa's home for children in Calcutta:

People are often unreasonable, irrational, and self-centered.
Forgive them  anyway.

If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives.
Be kind anyway.

If you are successful, you will win some unfaithful friends and some genuine enemies.
Succeed anyway.

If you are honest and sincere people may deceive you.
Be honest and sincere anyway.

What you spend years creating, others could destroy overnight.
Create anyway.

If you find serenity and happiness, some may be jealous.
Be happy anyway.

The good you do today, will often be forgotten.
Do good anyway.

Give the best you have, and it will never be enough.
Give your best anyway.

In the final analysis, it is between you and God.
It was never between you and them anyway.

-this version is credited to Mother Teresa

Baba Ramdev, educated society and religion

There are lot of ignorant educated people out in India who think that Yoga is to do with religion. I got one guy commenting on twitter that "I don't have anything do with a man who wears a saffron attire"

Yoga is to do with the body and the mind that leads to spirituality. Dear friends religion and spirituality are not the same. In fact religion is where you follow a book of rules, while spirituality is just about an experience of an healthy body and mind.

I have never been in favor of Baba Ramdev's speeches on issues, not because he didnt have a good agenda in place. He has a very simplistic approach to solve huge societal issues that cannot be done by in manners he executes them. Further his style may also not be very attractive as he isnt as suave an educated English speaking society in the cities would look at it. :P

When Baba Ramdev started his fast, I was not keenly following it but I happened to see the lathi charge late night when we got back home after a happy Saturday night partying. It was certainly shocking and exposed what the government can get at.

While tweeting I didn't see any of the people there really getting together to raise their voice against the police brutality instead they mocked Baba Ramdev, his garb, his escape and the happenings. Mr. Anna Hazaare was not part of Baba Ramdev's fast  but after the Government action through the police, he has shown his support to Baba Ramdev because one can see "Something is terribly wrong" and as responsible citizens we shouldn't act ignorant :)

And when I saw my friend Arul's status, I was happy to know one person got it :)

"Arul (Ta'fxkz) Baliah: Ramdev has said that yoga cannot be limited to physical exercises, that it also a way to cleanse the soul and the society Regardless of his motivations, I have to agree with that sentiment. The ancient paths of the spiritual seers were not a bunch feel good practices but actual revolution, war and great personal risk. (www.tafxkz.info)"

And who wants a revolution, who cares. Arent we so comfortable doing what we do everyday??

Wake up you illiterate educated fools!!!

Feeling Obliged

Column by Sri Sri Ravishankar

Feeling Obliged?
Belongingness can bring about a host of negative emotions. Like demand, jealousy, unawareness and lack of gratitude. Just look into your own life, you feel more grateful to strangers than the people you feel "belong" to you. Belongingness reduces gratefulness, awareness, and gives rise to demands which destroys love. This is the biggest problem in relationships. People are nice to strangers and give more attention to them. With a sense of belongingness comes carefreeness and lack of attention.

Look belongingness can make you insensitive, dull, and take away the charm in life!

Anyway, who belongs to whom in this world? Here you are a stranger and everyone is a stranger to you!
Blessed are those who feel themselves as a stranger!

You feel more obligation to a stranger than the person you feel belongs to you. Obligation is very good to keep a check on your ego. It makes you humble. There is no greater antidote to ego than humility. Being humble is the beginning of all virtues.

People have such resistance for obligations. They do not realize that they are always under obligations, whether giving or taking! Dull people think that one is obliged only when one takes. The wise knows that even when one is giving one is under obligations, as the person has accepted what one gives. So whether you give or take you are under obligations. And if someone does not give or take, you are still under obligation! For they are freeing you from visible obligations!!

That is to say, you are obliged to all those who do not make you obliged!!! Got it?

Life (you) renews itself everytime by becoming a stranger in this old and familiar world.
You are simply loaded with obligations and you are a total stranger in this world every moment!
How does it feel?

EGO

Column by Sri Sri Ravishankar

 EGO
 When does Ego happen?

1. When you don't get attention.

2. When you seem to be losing attention.

3. When you get attention.

Ego causes heaviness, discomfort. It doesn't let love flow. Ego can be transcended by knowing the Truth; by inquiring "Who am I?" Often, your attitude towards one who has ego is of contempt or jealousy. But rather you should have compassion, or even pity, isn't it?

There is also a positive aspect of ego. It drives one to do some work. A person will do a job either out of compassion or out of ego. Most of the work in the society is by boosting the ego. But in Satsang, work is done out of love. Ego is separateness; non-belongingness. It is wanting to prove and to possess.

And when you wake up and see, there is nothing to be proved and nothing to possess, ego dissolves.

Love is my Form

I was fortunate to study for 5 years in Sai Baba's school in Ooty for my primary education. Till date I remember this song sung by Baba:

================
Love is my form
Truth is my breath
Bliss is my food
My Life is my message
Expansion is my Life

No Reason for LOVE
No Season for LOVE
No Birth No Death

O my spirit, Transcend all boundaries!

Aniketana – Kuvempu

Listen to the song here:

O nanna chetana
Aagu nee aniketana!
O my spirit,
Transcend all boundaries!

Roopa roopagalanu daati,
Naama kotigalanu meeti,
Edeya biriye bhaavadeeti,
O nanna chetana,
Aagu nee aniketana!

Transcend all forms,
Transcend all identities,
Even as sentiment pierces the heart,
O my spirit,
Transcend all boundaries!

Nooru matada hotta thoori,
Ella tatvadelle meeri,
Nirdigantavaagi aeri,
O nanna chetana
Aagu nee aniketana!

Blow away the chaff of a hundred castes,
Transcend the limits of all philosophies,
Rise beyond the horizons,
O my spirit,
Transcend all boundaries!

Elliyoo nilladiru,
Maneyanendu kattadiru,
Koneyanendoo muttadiru,
O anantavaagiru!
O nanna chetana
Aagu nee aniketana!

Do not stop anywhere,
Do not be bound by narrow walls,
Never be content in reaching the finite,
O be eternal,
O my spirit,
Transcend all boundaries!

Ananta taan anantavaagi,
Aagutihane nityayogi,
Ananta neen anantavaagu:
Aagu, aagu, aagu, aagu,
O nanna chetana
Aagu nee aniketana!

The eternal always remains eternal,
A yogi becomes eternal,
You are eternal, be always eternal:
Be, be, be, be eternal,
O my spirit,
Transcend all boundaries!

This is my daughter’s school song and when I read it in her diary it was indeed an awakening for me.  As a kid at school I read Kuvempu poems but now I see the true greatness of the poet. Learn more about Kuvempu here:

Gratitude

Have you tried living life by gratitude, every second filled with thankfulness.  It’s a new realm that is devoid of turbulence, anxiety, resentment and reprisal. The being is full of love, the world belongs to me and I belong to the world.

What is gratitude?  A simple "thank you" to our existence, to the beautiful life we have and the awesome human beings we meet.

A few days back I got pretty irritated after an online chat with a friend. She always has this overbearing attitude and trying to be very coaching in her manner. I was thinking of actually blocking her from my chat, just to save myself from getting peeved when I have to interact with her. I reflected over my reaction and was thinking of how bugging she can get. I thought though she isn’t so bad after all and reckoned the numerous ways she has helped me and been such a wonderful friend.  I softened and felt no anger.

I introduced this approach with any person I connected with, even more when I got upset or angry after the interaction. Everybody had something they had given me in life, every single soul I met felt so lovableJ.
The little things in life that we take for granted, the family and friends who are always there are never in our radar of gratefulness.  Ingratitude is the penalty we pay that results out of ignorance and a single focus on our individual advancements. We miss on the miraculous life and joyful relationships that can make our world beautiful.

Practice gratitude and reach out to more. Get abundance within your space and expand your universe to the limitless.

Love and Lust

Column by Sri Sri Ravishankar

Doubt cannot come where there is a sense of closeness. Doubt needs a distance to appear. You never doubt something that is dear to you, close to you.

In love even an object gains life. Stones speak to you, trees speak to you, the sun, the moon and the whole creation becomes alive, Divine. In lust even a living being becomes a mere object. You want to use even people like objects. Here are some salient attributes of love and lust. They are so different yet so close! If you find more
you may add to the list.

  • Lust brings tension. ~ Love brings relaxation.
  • Lust focuses on the part. ~ Love focuses on the whole.
  • Lust brings violence. ~ Love brings sacrifice.
  • In lust you want to grab and ~ In love you want to give and possess. surrender.
  • Lust says all I want you to have ~ Love says I want you to have is what I want. what you want.
  • In lust there is effort. ~ Love is effortless.
  • Lust causes feverishness and ~ Love causes longing and frustration. pain.
  • Lust imprisons and destroys. ~ Love liberates and sets you free.
  • Lust demands. ~ Love commands.
  • Lust gets you mixed up and ~ In love you are focused confused. and spaced out!!
  • Lust is only dark and monotonous. ~ Love has many modes and colours.

If someone's lust is interrupted they get angry and start hating. Hatred in the world today is not out of love, it is out of lust.

Love is playfulness and in lust there is cunningness and manipulation. Shiva, the embodiment of innocence and love was meditating. His meditation was disturbed by an arrow of flowers from the lord of lust. As soon as Shiva woke up he opened his third eye and the lord of lust, Manmatha (one who churns the mind) was reduced to ashes. Everybody celebrated by throwing colors on each other realising that life is full of colours.

We play many roles in our life. If all the roles get mixed up it becomes dark, like when you mix all the colours. The wise play each role distinctively side by side, like colors displayed side by side form a rainbow.

Insights Of Love

Insights Of Love
-Sri Sri Ravishankar
Love is your nature.

In the process of its expression, you often get caught up in the object. This is when your sight is caught outside. To return back to your nature, you need insight.

Pain is the first insight.
It takes you away from the object and turns you towards your body and mind.

Energy is the second insight.
A bolt of energy brings you back to your Self.

Divine Love is the third insight.
A glimpse of Divine love makes you so complete and over rules all the relative pleasures.

Trance is the fourth insight.
An elevation of consciousness and partial awareness of the physical reality around is Trance.

Non-dual existence, that all is made up of one and only one, is the fifth insight.

When love glows, it is bliss,
When it flows, it is compassion,
When it blows, it is anger,
When it ferments, it is jealously,
When it is all Nos, it is hatred,
When it acts, it is perfection,
When love Knows, it is ME!

Desire and Duties

Desire gives us pain whatever the desire maybe. The freedom is when we are desire free. Its strength, its power and it happiness.

Desire should not be confused with a goal.

A goal is not the same as a desire, and this is an important distinction to make. You can have a desire you don't intend to act on. But you can't have a goal you don't intend to act on.
-Tom Morris

When people are troubled, I tell them to let go of desires and concentrate on your duties.

Whats my duty? I ask myself this question and life is simplified, focussed and responsible.

Our duty, as men and women, is to proceed as if limits to our ability did not exist. We are collaborators in creation.

Is being Selfish Good?

To protect one's interests is primary and natural in all human beings. Is being selfish the only way? or being selfless is wiser? Who is more evolved a selfish or selfless being?

My family, my career, my garden and my dog ....my my my and me me me me...

When you meet some people, haven't you observed they cant stop talking about themselves. It can get very irritating and also one cannot connect with someone who is not interested in the other human...

According to me the weak and the fearful are selfish. They are the people one needs to feel sympathy for rather than get angry with.

The brave and the fearless are selfless. They can take risks and pains to help another. They can think beyond themselves, and leave behind the me & myself saga :)
